English Light Dragon Pistol Pattern 1759 17-14
Pattern of 1759 issued early in reign of George III. The pistol has a 9-1/8” inch .65 caliber round smoothbore
Barrel and brass hardware with an Arsenal rack “HB” stamped on left side of stock. The lock has an early flat plate with crown and cipher of George III. And is marked “Tower”. Stock has typical beaver tail carving behind breech and is of beech or walnut wood and has some old dents and dings. Looks very old, the brass tipped ramrod is original. Circa 176-1770. History: Based on the successful performance of the new light dragoon units created in 1756, full regiments were authorized in 1759. At that time a revised nine-inch barrel (.65 caliber) pistol pattern was adopted for them (replacing the 10”), based on a design by Col. Elliot. The model remained in use as their standard handgun through the American Revolution; where it was carried by Britain’s 16th and 17th Light Dragoons. Note the innovations this pattern includes: a simple butt cap with the prior long straps removed, a flat S-form side plate and pointed trigger guard; a straight rounded lock having both bridles and incorporating a forward notch on the cock’s rectangular upper post (some had flat posts) elimination of the escutcheon; a single cast thimble for the wooden rod (brass tip); and raised beaver-tail carving around the barrel tang of the walnut stock. The lock is marked on its tail by the marker “EDGE / 1760”, plus “crown / GR / broad arrow” under the pan. Its barrel bears both Tower proofs and “crown / crossed scepters” on the tang.
