Description:
L.C. Smith Ideal Grade 16 Gauge Side by Side
INCREDIBLE WOOD, HIGH STOCK DIMENSIONS, FACTORY ORIGINAL

General Specs: LC Smith, Year 1941, 16 Gauge, 6lbs 12oz, SxS
Serial Number: 194250

The Ideal Grade L.C. Smith is the first level of a "graded" Elsie, with open foliate engraving pattern, nicer wood and checkering than the Field grade, and the banjo style forend latch rather than a snap-on forend.  They made around 4460 Ideal Grades in 16ga., so it is not a "rare" gun.  However, I have never seen an original Ideal Grade with wood as figured on both sides as this gun.  The gun has strong fiddleback figure and the finish is the original finish from 1941.  If we restore this stock with a Truoil finish the figure would really pop!  We all love great wood and it is not easy to find on an Ideal Grade gun (cost to restore the wood in our shop is $450 done to perfection within 90 days of purchase).  Also, it has modern stock dimensions with 14” LOP to the original butt plate, 2 ¼” drop at heel, 1 5/16” drop at the nose of comb, and 1/8” cast off.  Again, not something you often see on an early L.C. Smith gun.  Importantly, there are no cracks, splits, or repairs to the wood and the wood-to-metal fit is perfect.  This gun, serial number 194250 made in 1941 by the Hunter Arms Co., also has the “SINGLE SIGHTING PLANE RIB” which gives you a sight picture that does not include the barrels.  Only the rib is in your sight picture so it is like sighting down the barrels of an auto or O/U.  This fine Elsie is completely untouched, factory original finishes on all metal and wood.  The 28” barrels have 99% factory blue, double ivory beads, mirror bores, sharp and clear lettering.  This gun was special order by someone who knew what they wanted and had good taste!  The receiver has 75% factory case color, perfect screws, perfect mechanics.  Simply a great old gun, especially if you like them untouched.  I would recommend the stock refinish and a thorough cleaning in our Ultrasonic cleaner to add another 75 years of life and beauty this gun.  It would really be a stunning L.C. Smith.  Thanks for looking!
