Description:
#4782 Smith & Wesson 1881 First Model Double Action, serial numbered in the 5XXX range so most likely manufactured in late 1881 or 1882, 6” barrel, caliber 44SWR with G+/VG bore (about a 5-1/2 to 6 on a scale of 10). Very good action and tight hinge lock-up and ejector working properly. Checked walnut grips show medium wear and have no serious chips or splits, and do look to be the originals to this revolver. The metal is smooth and crisp-edged with VG markings but there is no finish at all left on the exterior; just a smooth even neutral grey color. This model large frame 1881 S&W was a stiff competitor to the Colt 1878 D/A, and were somewhat less troublesome in their mechanics than the Colt. It is well thought that the bandit queen, Belle Starr, was often noted to have carried a 44caliber Smith & Wesson 1881 during some time during her criminal activities with the Daltons and other “bad-boy” groups, but I cannot find anything on the internet that substantiates this fact. These big Smiths were, however, sturdy and dependable “modern” sidearms that were both much easier to load and eject as well as being both S/A and D/A actions, so it’s conceivable that many lawmen as well as outlaws would have used them. VG as described. $1295
