Antique Afghan Jezail Flintlock Musket With Brown Bess Lock
Here we present an antique Afghan Jezail Flintlock Musket with a British Brown Bess Lock, made circa 1800-1840s. Such weapons were used against the British in the Anglo-Afghan Wars by extremely capable Afghan warriors. As an officer described from the First Anglo-Afghan War:
“Afghan snipers were expert marksmen and their juzzails fired roughened bullets, long iron nails or even pebbles over a range of some 250 metres. The Afghans could fling the large rifles across their shoulders as if they were feathers and spring nimbly from rock to rock.”
The distinct shape of the stock and the length of the barrel is for convenience of shooting and loading from the back of a horse or camel. One could lower the butt all the way to the ground and have easy access to the muzzle for loading.
This example is in very good conditioin. The barrel is of Middle Eastern styling and held by 6 brass barrel bands. The rear sight is a peep that is built into the barrel. There are also more decorative features like the brass piece above the wrist of the stock and the shape of the barrel bands. Bore is smooth.
