Description:
A TRULY EXCITING COLT! FLATTOP TARGET BISLEY, MAGNIFICENT MELLOW IVORY GRIPS IN .32-20, WITH FACTORY LETTER, SHIPPED 1907! Colt only made a total of 976 Bisley Flattop Target revolvers in all calibers and styles and of those 131 were made in .32-20 caliber.  I found this one here in an old Montana collection and sent for the Colt letter myself. The letter reads that #278XXX is a Bisley Flattop Target Revolver, .32-20, 7 1/2" barrel, blue, type of stocks not listed, sold to Hassiger Hardware & Implement Co. address unavailable, shipped to Farwell, Ozmun, Kirk and Company, St Paul, Minnesota on January 5, 1907, number of same type guns in shipment: 1.  I did a quick online search concerning Hassiger Hardware, but found nothing- some more diligent investigating would probably yield better results. The fact that the letter had the type of stocks as "not listed" means they were probably standard rubber Bisley grips, so probably the ivory stocks were added by either Hassiger Hardware or Farwell, Ozmun, Kirk and Co. who were known Colt dealers. Certainly, judging by the professional fit of the grips and their obvious age of the ivory suggest that they have always been on this particular gun.  Also, judging by the caliber that was ordered and where the gun was shipped leads me to think this was a "working gun" as opposed to a gun used strictly on the target range had it been in a different caliber and shipped to New York or Boston for example. Obviously this gun has seen honest use and carry, but was well taken care of. The barrel and ejector housing  retain a little less than half aged blue mixing evenly with gray/brown, likewise the cylinder shows good thinning blue mixing in the same way, Flattop frames were full blued and this one shows blue in protected areas with the balance gray/brown as does the grip straps and trigger guard, exc. markings throughout, matching numbers, exc. screws, unaltered rear sight, front sight is a pinned brass blade in the correct original boss that appears to be original, fine cylinder pin, tight action with four clicks, bore will clean to about exc. with anything that doesn't clean to be minor, the mellow creamy/yellow ivory grips fit very well and show all the age lines on the outside and butt that collectors love to see without any cracks or chips! A great investment Colt of a type that rarely come up for sale.
