Description:
Antique 18th Century Spanish Military Flintlock Pistol

Rare Large Patilla Miquelet Horse Pistol

Here we present an antique Spanish Flintlock Holster Pistol, likely made during the 18th century, but locks such as these were in use as early as the 17th century. This large and heavy pistol was made for the Spanish Imperial Military. It features a large “patilla” lock, as well as a large belt or retention hook on the left side of the gun. It pre-dates the Model 1752, based on the French flintlock system of the time.

The 18th century under the Bourbons was an eventful period for Spain. Having reached climax during Spain’s “Golden Age” through political, military and colonial dominance in the 1600s, the trajectory throughout the 1700s was steadily downward. Not surprisingly, poor leadership, massive government bureaucracy, patronage, constant warfare, a stagnating economy and plague all played a part. Warfare involving Spain during this time ranges from colonial, to the War of Spanish Succession, the Seven Years War, and even the Napoleonic Wars.

This pistol is in quite good condition for being 250-350 years old. It was certainly not babied during its service life. It was meant to be big, rugged and deadly, even after its single shot had been expended. Its large, brass pommel was meant to crush skulls on the battlefield. The gun was made by hand and features what is likely the maker’s mark “J.H” on the lock. The stock shows a fair amount of weathering and hard use. The lock is in very good condition and functional, which is certainly a scarcity for weapons this old. Imagine putting this on your belt or doing a cavalry charge with this in your hand in the 1700s.
