Less than 20,000 of these were made for the U.S. military. Many were updated to the much more reliable percussion system in the 1830s. The service life was quite long for this pistol. The famous scout and Indian fighter Kit Carson fought with one of these, still in its original flintlock form, during the Mexican-American War from 1846-48. Even though percussion arms, including pistols, had been adopted by the U.S. in the 30s, it was not unusual for flintlocks to still be in use. Primary conflicts that would have involved this piece during its service life were the Seminole Wars, the Pawnee Expedition, the Mexican-American War and even the American Civil War. This pistol features the early lock markings. It remains unconverted from its original flintlock mechanism, making it quite the exception after many were converted and all were used very hard. All parts made of browned iron with the flash pan made of brass. The left side of the stock is stamped “V/LS” for the inspector Luther Sage. Screws are marked “F”. Both sides of the breech of the barrel are marked: left marked “P/US” and right marked “J”. Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction. Barrel is 9 1/16 inches in length. Caliber: .54 percussion The bore is in good condition. The firing mechanism is very good and functional. Overall condition as seen in photos. This really is a very nice and historical piece used from the early days of 19th century all the way up through the American Civil War. Very Fast. Very Safe. FREE SHIPPING WORLDWIDE.
