Army Model Rifle, made circa 1863 in Boston, Massachusetts. These lever operated, breech-loading rifles were marvels of the time and had an impact on how war was to be fought in the future. Though their service life in the U.S. military was relatively short, the Spencer story includes Christopher Spencer, the inventor of the rifle, demonstrating and shooting with President Abraham Lincoln, who gave his full endorsement of the piece. While the Spencer carbine has a fascinating history unto itself, the Spencer “musket” style, full length rifle was the one made famous for its use at Gettysburg by none other than George Armstrong Custer and his 5th Michigan Cavalry. Supposedly, a captured Rebel that day said one could “load in the morning and fire all day!” This was due to the Spencer’s most endearing quality: a 7 round magazine tube in the butt of the gun. This gave the shooter phenomenal firepower in a day when most soldiers were muzzle-loading single shots or even singly loading their breech-loading carbines. This specimen is in good condition. The markings on the metal surfaces remain crisp and clear, including the various sub-inspector markings that appear on many of the parts. The wood stock certainly shows wear, as is befitting a 150 year old veteran of the Civil War. The action is excellent. This is exactly what you want in a historical firearm. Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction. Other examples found up to $12,000! Barrel is 30 inches in length. Caliber: .52 caliber rimfire (56-56 or No.56) Bore is in good condition.
