Description:
Antique U.S. Navy Jenks-Remington Breech Loading Carbine

Rare 1 of 1000 Tape Primed Version Dated 1847

Here we present an antique U.S. Navy Jenks-Remington Breech Loading Carbine with the Maynard Tape Priming System, made circa 1847 by E. Remington & Son in Herkimer, New York. Only 1,000 of these were made from 1847-48. The primary users were the U.S. Navy, Bureau of Ordnance and Hydrography, and even the U.S. Revenue Cutter Service, though the latter are extremely rare. Some were even given to companies D and E of the 1st Regiment of Dragoons for testing. These were used during the Mexican-American War and were still in use during the American Civil War.

What made the Jenks design unique was its convenient breech-loading capability. Pinch the ears of the rear sight and lift up to expose an oval aperture for loading a paper cartridge. This version has the Maynard tape priming system which made the carbine even more advanced, though the paper priming system was not as reliable as desired.

This specimen was produced by E. Remington & Son after acquiring a contract for 1000 pieces from the original producer, the Ames Mfg. Co. The lock reads “Remington’s/Herkimer/NY”. The breech cover is marked “W.Jenks/USN/RP/P/1847/Cast Steel”. The initials “RP” is for inspector Ricnard Paine. Condition is very good. Inspector cartouche on the left side of the stock is visible but somewhat obscured. Barrel retains its browned finish. Wood stock shows some handling, but is in very good condition. Brass parts also show sub-inspector marks “P”. Bore is fine. Action is excellent.

Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction. Other example found for up to $6200!

Barrel is 25 inches in length.

Caliber: .54 percussion

Bore is in fine condition. The firing mechanism is excellent.

Overall condition as seen in photos.

Here is a rare version of the only officially adopted side-hammer firearm in U.S. military history.
