Description:
Antique Imperial Spanish Patilla Flintlock Pistol

Dated 1818 and Eibar Marked

Here we present an antique Imperial Spanish Patilla Flintlock Pistol, made in 1818 in Eibar, Spain. This pistol saw a lot of history go by in the years after its manufacture. Beginning in 1808, Spain saw its colonies in South America fall to independence inspired insurrection movements in rapid succession. Much of this had to do with ideas and precedents set with other revolutions like the United States and France, among others. Spain’s desire to keep its colonies under the royal thumb backfired and the Peninsular War with Napoleon was the opportunity that the revolutionaries had been looking for. Imperial Spain fought for 15 years to keep the colonies, but finally conceded defeat in 1833 with the death of King Ferdinand VII.

There was also much unrest in Spain itself during this time period. In 1820, Colonel Rafael de Riego successfully overthrew Ferdinand VII, put him under arrest and founded a liberal government called the Progresista, which lasted for the next 3 years. This was known as the Trienio Liberal. This period was marked by civil war in many regions of Spain, as the king’s backers resisted the changes. Eventually, the Holy Alliance of France, Russia, Prussia and Austria decided to intervene to restore King Ferdinand to the throne and handily put down the revolution with 100,000 troops from Bourbon France. Much more could be said about this fascinating period in history.

This specimen features engraving on the pommel, side plate, lock, barrel and trigger guard. Much of this engraving, the proof marks and the maker’s marks are inlaid with gold. The vent is also lined in gold. The maker’s mark is very well preserved and reads as follows: “P./VGN/ARA/NA”. “Arana” appears to the last name of the artisan. Further in depth research would likely reveal the full name of the maker and maybe something of his personal history. Another maker’s mark may be on the trigger guard, but the letters are small and somewhat obscure despite the gold being very much present there. The barrel is also dated “AÑO D 1818” and bears the place of manufacture “EN EIBAR”, both markings made in gold. Proof marks are three fleur-de-lys, representing the Spanish House of Bourbon, and a cross.

The condition is very good. The gold inlay is mostly present. The bore is smooth and clean. The action is excellent. There is a small graft on the stock above the lock. Overall, an excellent piece that would be at home on display in a museum. Display it in your home, library or office.
