Description:
Antique Jehial Ogden Full Stock Percussion Rifle

Marked by NY Arms Dealer A.W. Spies

Here we present an antique Full Stock Percussion Rifle, made circa 1830 by J. Ogden in Owego, New York. It is also marked on the lock with “A.W. Spies”, the major New York arms dealers that it was sold through.

The American Longrifle, more commonly, but less correctly, known as the 'Kentucky rifle', was described by Captain John G. W. Dillin in the dedication to his seminal 1924 book, The Kentucky Rifle:

“From a flat bar of soft iron, hand forged into a gun barrel; laboriously bored and rifled with crude tools; fitted with a stock hewn from a maple tree in the neighboring forest; and supplied with a lock hammered to shape on the anvil; an unknown smith, in a shop long since silent, fashioned a rifle which changed the whole course of world history; made possible the settlement of a continent; and ultimately freed our country of foreign domination.
Light in weight; graceful in line; economical in consumption of powder and lead; fatally precise; distinctly American; it sprang into immediate popularity; and for a hundred years was a model often slightly varied but never radically changed.”

This specimen features a very nice engraved brass patchbox and butt plate. The patchbox door open with a push of a small brass button on the bottom of the stock. The “J.Ogden/Owego, NY” maker’s mark is on top of the octagonal barrel. The lock is marked “A.W. Spies/Warranted”. Lock is also lightly engraved.

Jehial Ogden was a known gunsmith, along with his brothers, Walter and Charles in Owego, New York. Not much is written about him, but a very short story from 1907 appears in a book called Historickal Crotchets and recounts a time in Owego during which a deer was spotted, apparently a very rare occurrence. In fact, deer were so hunted out that many of the residents came out to see it and trapped it in a river that flowed past the village. Jehial is said to have taken one of his rifles out and shot it in 1847. This is just a random little story that one would not expect to find mention of given the obscurity of the event and the folks involved.

Overall condition is very good. Brass butt plate, patchbox, trigger guard, ramrod retainers and muzzle cap are bright and in very good condition. Walnut stock is full length and in good condition. One very short, not structurally threatening crack on the bolt near the left side of the breech, opposite the lock. Nice deep brown patina throughout the barrel and lock. Markings are legible. Bore is smooth and in very good condition. Action is in very good condition.

Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.

Barrel is 38 inches in length.

Caliber: .62 percussion

Bore is in very good condition. The firing mechanism is in very good condition.

Overall condition as seen in photos.
