Description:
Custom Antique US Springfield M1884 Trapdoor Rifle

Professionally Restored & Customized by R. Binger

Here we present an antique Springfield Model 1884 Trapdoor Rifle, made circa 1884. The “Trapdoor” Springfield is the military rifle that comes to mind when the Indian War is mentioned. It was rugged, reliable, powerful and accurate. It stayed in service for decades under the harshest conditions. When the Civil War was over and the U.S. looked to modernize its arsenal they conveniently had a couple million obsolete rifle-muskets laying around. Instead of simply scrapping them or selling them off as surplus—which they did to many—the government decided to modify the muzzle-loaders to breech-loaders by cutting into the breech and installing the trapdoor. These Trapdoors are rich with history and saw to the “taming” of the West. Amazingly, despite the adoption of the ill-fated Model 1882 Chaffee-Reese Bolt Action Magazine Rifle, new models of trapdoor rifles continued to be produced and used all the way through the mid-1890s, until finally, the Krag-Jorgensen was adopted. The U.S. continued to see unrest and conflict with the displaced Native Americans during this time, including the Wounded Knee Massacre on December 29th, 1890. Trapdoors continued to see use all the way through the Spanish American War.

This specimen is one of a kind! The serial number shows it to be a Model 1884. The breechblock is marked “US/Model/1873”, however it is known that the earliest production of M1884s (1884 to early 1887) were fitted with the remaining stock of M1873 parts, so as not to waste. The butt plate has no provision for a cleaning rod compartment, also consistent with M1873 parts. The metal parts were all casehardened. After its service with the United States Army, it was presumably sold as surplus. In the mid-to-late-20th century this rifle was professionally restored and artfully customized by Richard “Dick” Binger of Stott’s Creek Armory, Inc. in Morgantown, Indiana. Mr. Binger is a renowned gunsmith, practicing since the mid-to-late-20th century, with a particular affinity for single-shot rifles. This rifle as it is currently configured is a beauty. It features a trim, half-stock with excellent checkering. The lock, hammer, tang and breechblock are superbly case-colored. The robust and adjustable u-notch rear sight and the tall, brass, shark fin front sight sit atop a heavy octagonal barrel. It all balances very well and would be especially good for off-hand shooting. This rifle was made to be shot, so if you like to reload and shoot the venerable 45-70 GOVT, this is your rifle.

The overall condition is fine. The case colors are vibrant and near 100%. The finish on the barrel is virtually complete as well. Edges of the barrel flats are sharp. Markings are clear and legible. The oiled walnut stock features an ebony insert in the Schnabel fore-end. The original U.S. military inspector cartouche is still visible. The stock is structurally sound and smooth. The bore is fine and shiny. The action is excellent.
