Description:
Antique R.P. Bruff Deringer Percussion Pistol

Engraved, Civil War Era Self-Defense Deringer

Here we present an antique R.P. Bruff Percussion Deringer, made circa 1860 in New York, NY. Richard P. Bruff was in a partnership called Bruff, Brother & Seaver beginning in 1856. The New-York Sketch Book and Merchants’ Guide, published in 1859, has a section devoted to the firm that reveals the brothers, Richard and Charles Bruff, and their associate George Arthur Seaver to make up “this young and enterprising firm”, which “although little more than three years in existence, holds a prominent position in the Southern Trade.” Their business was located in an “unsurpassed facilit[y]”—a warehouse—at No. 44 Warren Street with a staff of up to 30 men. Their product ranged from tools, cutlery and largely imported fine goods to firearms.

The article states “To the Gun department Messrs. Bruff, Brother & Seaver devote especial attention. All their guns are made expressly for and adapted to the Southern trade, and bear the celebrated stamp of R.P. Bruff.” Congressional records from 1863 and 1864 show that Bruff was also the manager of the Joslyn Fire-Arms Company, having the authority to make contracts with the United States Chief of Ordnance to provide the Union with Joslyn carbines and revolvers during the American Civil War. It is not exactly clear whether Richard Bruff was simply a in these deals or if he was working solely for Joslyn at this time, but his business appears to last through the mid-1870s.

This specimen is a very near and quality copy of Henry Deringer’s famous pistol design. It is marked “R.P. BRUFF/N.Y.” in an arch and then “CAST STEEL” on the barrel, just like the article mentions. The pistol features decorative scroll engraving throughout, as well as German silver trigger guard, escutcheons and inlays. The rear of the breech is double banded in silver and the front sight is also silver. This is a very stately firearm that was very popular in its time. As Norm Flaydermann put it “the type achieved wide popularity as a short range arm for self defense, gaining its greatest footholds and widest favor throughout the American South and West, especially in those areas that were heavily settled, but short on law and order; places where the prudent citizen and businessman found it desirable (if not mandatory) to be inconspicuously armed.”

The overall condition of this piece is very good. The barrel’s original brown finish has aged nicely into a dark gray. The walnut stock is sound and in good condition with much of the original varnish. The bore is very good and the action is excellent.

Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.

Barrel is 3-1/8 inches in length.

Caliber: .41 percussion

The bore is in very good condition and the firing mechanism is excellent.

Overall condition as seen in photos.

Here is a very nice Deringer for your collection.
