Antique J. Krider Half-Stock Percussion Rifle

John Krider Made Pennsylvania Rifle w Heavy Barrel

Here we present an antique Half-Stock Pennsylvania Percussion Rifle, made circa 1840s by John H. Krider in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. John Krider was born in Philadelphia and by the age of 24 was making a living of gunsmithing. Locally he was known as an avid outdoorsman, who loved hunting and fishing, and fancied himself as an ornithologist. He shot and mounted many birds, donating them to the Academy of Natural Sciences in Philadelphia, and eventually wrote a book on the subject.

Throughout the blossoming United States, he was known for his fine workmanship in making firearms. His shop carried his own handiwork and was also a retailer of both local and imported sporting goods. Much of his work went West with the pioneers and settlers of the day and he might be most known for his own version of Henry Deringer’s style of single shot percussion pistol. His shop was located in the famous Drinker Building at 2nd and Walnut Streets. Much more may be read in the article “Fishing Tackle from Eastern Pennsylvania: John Krider and the Sportmen’s Depot” by Steven K. Vernon, of which a copy will be included with this firearm and provided for your reading pleasure on my .

This specimen is in .36 caliber. It features a long and heavy octagonal barrel with a silver blade front sight, double set triggers, and light engraving. The barrel tang, lock, hammer, butt plate, trigger guard and patchbox are engraved and the lock is marked “KRIDER”. The inside of the patchbox door contains stamped writing, but it is not quite legible.

The overall condition is very good with a solid brown patina on the barrel, hammer and lock. Brass has a dark patina. The external markings are very clear and legible. The walnut stock is solid with only a minor sliver that has been repaired on the left side of the forearm. The bore is in very good condition, as is the percussion nipple. The firing mechanism is excellent.

Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.
Barrel is 38-5/8 inches in length.
Caliber: .36 percussion
Bore is in very good, clean condition. The firing mechanism is fine.
Overall condition as seen in photos.
