Basing his design off Hugo Borchardt’s seminal C93, Georg Luger successfully brought Borchardt’s work to practical and productive fruition. While finding buyers for the C93 seemed an exercise in futility, the new Luger Pistol found many countries eager to test it and even adopt it. There are many variations in this field of collecting, but relatively few major changes in overall design from beginning to end. The 1900 Commercial’s total production was only 6,500 before relatively small but important improvements precipitated a new designation, making these scarce. This group of pistols was sent to no fewer than 13 different countries for military testing. The Swiss are the most notable early adopters of the Luger pistol. Aside from military trials, these were also made for the commercial market within Germany. This pistol features the early grip safety, dished toggle knobs, long frame and receiver, and the “crown/B, U, G” proofs. “GERMANY” is stamped on the frame under the serial number, indicating that it was exported to another country. It is chambered for the 7.65 Luger cartridge. The top of the toggle is marked with the “DWM” monogram. The serial number is 4044 and all numbers match. The trigger is the narrow version, slightly offset to the right. The extractor is flat. The nickel-plated magazine is correctly unmarked. The safety lever is of the early flat and checkered variety. The barrel is 4-3/4 inches long with a thin profile. A rare feature of this gun is the fact that while the barrel’s serial number matches the rest of the gun, the bottom of the barrel also bears a Swiss rework proof, suggesting that this barrel was taken from the Swiss line (which also falls into this serial range) and utilized in the regular Commercial line. The condition is fine. About 90% of the rust blue and almost all the straw colors are present. All markings are clear and legible. The checkered walnut grips are in fine condition with sharp checkering and little wear. Serial numbers match. Bore is very good. The action is excellent. This firearm is classified as a Curio & Relic. One example found elsewhere for $4650! Barrel is 4-3/4 inches in length. Caliber: 7.65 Luger (.30 Luger, 7.65x21 Parabellum) The bore is in very good condition and the action is in excellent condition. Overall condition as seen in photos.
