Description:
German DWM Luger 1920 Commercial Pistol in 7.65

Weimar Republic, Inter-World War Production Pistol

Here we present a Weimar Era German DWM (Deutsche Waffen-und Munitionsfabriken) 1920 Commercial Luger Pistol, made between the two World Wars, circa the 1920s in Berlin. Basing his design off Hugo Borchardt’s seminal C93, Georg Luger successfully brought Borchardt’s work to practical and productive fruition. While finding buyers for the C93 seemed an exercise in futility, the new Luger Pistol found many countries eager to test it and even adopt it. There are many variations in this field of collecting, but relatively few major changes in overall design from beginning to end. The Luger is certainly one of the most iconic firearms in history, made so by its association with Germany during the World Wars.

After the Great War, with the Treaty of Versailles, the Allies imposed limits on German arms production as well as the size of the military among other things. Two of these restrictions were 1) that the barrel length be less than 100mm, and 2) the caliber had to be less than 9mm. DWM was barely holding on after the war ended, especially since their biggest buyer, Germany, was defeated, broke and highly regulated. To regain their feet, they began assembling military pistol parts for export and commercial sale. This model is known as the 1920 Commercial Pistol and it had the intended effect of putting DWM back on its feet financially. It also had the effect of helping Germany re-arm during the interwar period.

This is one such specimen made for export. It is chambered for the 7.65 Luger, fulfilling the sub-9mm requirement, and it has a barrel length of 3-5/8 inches (92mm), also meeting the Treaty’s expectations. The extractor also acts as a loaded chamber indicator and is marked “GELADEN”. The safety is marked “GESICHERT”. The top of the toggle is marked with the “DWM” logo. The front of the frame is marked “GERMANY”. A “Crown/N” proof mark is found on the left side of the frame, the underside of the barrel and the toggle. This gun does feature a provision for a detachable shoulder stock.

The overall condition of this piece is fine. The original rust blue is 90% and the straw colors are nearly complete. The markings are clear and legible. The walnut stocks retain sharp checkering and remain in fine condition. The serial numbers match. The bore is fine and shiny. The action is excellent.
