Description:
U.S. President Grover Cleveland’s Turkish Pistols

With Notarized Statement from 1948, Double Holster

Here we present an antique Pair of Turkish Flintlock Pistols, made in the early 19th century. With the pistols comes an ornate double holster. The pistols themselves are highly decorated and include extensive wire inlays, figured brass pommels and accents, as well as barrel bands. Each pistol has a fixed ramrod which is typical of Ottoman pistols.

Also with this set comes a document notarized on October 13, 1948, stating that William Thayer purchased these pistols from U.S. President Grover Cleveland’s heirs and that this pistol was at one time owned by him.

President Cleveland was a Democrat who, before being elected President, was a lawyer, Sheriff of Erie County in New York, Mayor of Buffalo, and Governor of New York. He was the only U.S. President in history to have served two non-consecutive terms. He was defeated during his re-election by Benjamin Harrison in what has become to be known as one of the most corrupt elections in U.S. history. As he and his family were leaving the White House his wife, Frances Cleaveland, instructed a staffer, saying “I want you to take good care of all the furniture and the ornaments in the house, for I want to find everything just as it is now, when we come back again.” Cleveland then defeated Harrison 4 years later in his re-election to regain the post.

It is interesting to note that during his second term, on several occasions, Cleveland voraciously condemned the Ottoman Turks’ massacre of Armenian Christians. One occasion followed the Occupation of the Ottoman Bank in Constantinople by the Armenian Revolutionary Federation on August 26, 1896, when 26 of the group armed themselves and captured international attention by occupying (and not robbing) the bank. “I do not believe that the present sombre prospect in Turkey will be long permitted to offend the sight of Christendom. It so mars the humane and enlightened civilization that belongs to the close of the 19th century that it seems hardly possible that the earnest demand of good peoples throughout the Christian world for its corrective treatment will remain unanswered.” He was a non-interventionist, who followed his own interpretation of the Monroe Doctrine. Therefore he declined to send troops to intervene in the crisis, but instead offered asylum to those wanting to flee the terror of the Sultan. One wonders if these pistols and their holster might not be a gift from grateful Armenians.
Cleveland spent a considerable amount of his free time hunting and fishing, and it is said that he had a name for each of the rifles in his collection. “Death and Destruction” was the name of his favorite. The NRA currently has in their collection one of his shotguns, a rare Colt 8 gauge side-by-side.

The overall condition of the pistols is fair. The barrels and locks share a mostly even patina. The markings on the locks are clear. The stocks are heavily inlaid with wire and décor. The wood is somewhat chipped and repaired, but are absolutely suited for display. The bores are in very good condition. The actions are functional. The holster is delicate and complete a nice display.

Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.

Barrel is 13-3/4 inches in length.
