This is a Third Model Winchester 1873 Full Deluxe Rifle in caliber 38 WCF, serial # 146xxx. I have a factory letter, which states:

Rifle remains in this configuration. All casehardened areas have turned a mix of silver and patina, as has the barrel. Mag tube shows signs of an old re-blue. End of barrel (about 1" worth) shows extensive wear to the point where the octagon edges are very rounded. Sights are original semi-buckhorn rear with correct elevator and Rocky Mountain front. Original dust cover is present. Set trigger functions properly, as does half-cock safety, and action is stll pretty tight. Stocks are sound with no splits or cracks, normal dings and usage marks, and have an extra coat of varnish applied. Pistol grip has correct ebony insert. Checkering still in good condition. Brass cartridge lifter and trapdoor of buttplate remain uncleaned and that nice mustard brass color. Upper inletting of buttstock shows assembly # "5178" and "38" for the caliber. Lower tang shows assembly # "5178", XXX for stock grade, "38" for the caliber, and "R" for "rifle". Good shootable bore, plenty of rifling and exhibiting typical light scattered pitting and wear common to the black powder era rifles. All in all it's a decent full deluxe that is affordable and representative without having to take a second mortgage on your house to own; nice addition to a collection for someone who wants an inexpensive full deluxe 1873.
