Description:
SPANISH AMERICAN WAR PERIOD SPRINGFIELD U.S. MODEL 1884 TRAPDOOR RIFLE WITH BLACK (BUFFALO SOLDIER) REGIMENT ASSOCIATION. All matching and NOT a parts gun or Bannerman special as often seen. Serial number "463XXX" and very crisp stock cartouche "SWP/1889" (issued for Span-Am War 1898). 45-70Govt caliber. 32.6" barrel with crisp barrel stamps. "V" and "P" over Spfd Eagle as well as "1" and "A". Original arsenal front sight with hood and rear Buffington with correct "R' for rifle. All barrel bands(along with stacking swivel) original with same patina. Excellent original blue evenly spread over all metal parts. Correct "1884" trapdoor with traces of case colors under dark patina matching rest of receiver and barrel. All screws excellent. "U.S." stamped buttplate with some salt and pepper but should clean up fine. Excellent bore and crisp rifling would make nice shooter along with very tight lockup and mainspring tension. Wood excellent overall with original arsenal finish and almost no dings or scratches save a storage check here and there. Correct crisp Circle/P behind triggerguard. Some dark oil staining can be seen in photos in bleeding pattern. Some small wood loss where trapdoor release lever hits receiver typical and short stress hairline opposite also typical but sound. Springfield Research Center records puts serial number within the range of Companies K and D of the 9th USV Infantry who served in Cuba. Many of these units were black troops recruited from the South (over to Galveston, TX.) brought in to garrison the island untl April 1899. I'm sure more research will dig up further interesting history. Somewhere in the realm of 5,000 African Americans volunteered for service during the Span-Am War.
