HISTORIC REVOLUTIONARY WAR CHARLEVILLE MODEL 1774 MUSKET FROM THE OLD GARRISON HOUSE, KITTERY MAINE. 69 caliber smoothbore 45” barrel. In original flintlock and not a reconversion. Old tag circa early 1900’s states that it was one of two muskets “-acquired from the old Garrison House in Kittery, Maine where they hung for 175 years”. Also attached to the trigger guard is a lead collection tag of similar vintage with the impressed name of the early 1900’s collector “E. MILLER” and the number “25” on the obverse. The Garrison House at Kittery was one of a group of fortified dwellings established in the early 1700’s to protect the inhabitants against Indian attacks and which served as garrison houses and weapons depositories during the French and Indian War and the Revolution. In beautiful untouched and as found condition. Metal with all the proper markings and a very crisp script “CHARLEVILLE” mark on the lock plate. French inspection marks on the lock and side plate as well as the breech of the barrel. Side plate also stamped with a small “ME” and the forend with old worn brand “ME” as well-possibly indicating Maine. All original with the American steel ramrod and French Model 1754 hammer Revolutionary War replacements. Beautiful patina on metal excellent stock with only a sliver of wood missing on the left side near the forward band. Interestingly nearly all of the 70,000 Model 1774 muskets are presumed to have been shipped to America from Nantes in the late 1770’s (See Moller Vol. 1, pp. 296-297). Scarce and absolutely original Revolutionary War Charleville.
