SOLD ** FRANZ SODIA Hand-Detachable Sidelock Ejector, Two-barrel Set, -- 12ga. 2 ¾”, Excellent Plus

Are you in a gun club with shooters bragging about their $30,000, $40,000, $50,000 or even higher, high-end Italian or German sidelock over and unders?  Well here’s one that will take a backseat to none, would cost you close to $40,000 new but you can have it here for just over $ 9k! And it’s cased, with two sets of barrels, and beautiful engraving with concealed hand-detachable locks. Your shooting buddies will think it cost more than $40,000. This exact gun is shown on YouTube, Special Guns with Roger Rule, Episode 10. Start with rogerrule .

Franz Sodia is a premier Ferlach Austrian gunmaker since 1871*. This hand-made Best Gun (a Model 660-E, the highest grade in the line) was built in 1960 and is a re-design of the great Merkel 303-E, and like its predecessor, a best quality back-action sidelock ejector, featuring hand-detachable lockplates with integral bridles, intercepting safety sears, a double underbite system with one bifurcated lump, a Kersten top lock, an automatic top tang safety (disengaged, now manual for competition shooting) and automatic ejectors.

*German and Austrian over and unders pre-dated all others and were called “Bock Doppelflintes.”

With both 30” and 26” matted vent-rib barrels of “Bohler Spezial” steel, they feature white bead front sights. The 26” set is choked M/IC and the 30” barrels are both full. LOP is 14 5/8” with 1 ½” – 2 ¾” drop and ¼” cast off for the right hand shooter. This is a perfect combination for all clay target shooting.

The frame and lockplates have 100% engraving coverage of deeply etched and darkly shaded sprigs and leaves surrounding amazingly life-like game scenes.  The game scenes consist of a setter flushing pheasants on the left lockplate, a pointer flushing quail and rabbits on the right, and a capercallie on the underside surrounded with scroll and an oakleaf motif on action bolsters. The finish is French gray and fitted with a concealed sidelock release, bushed firing pins with retaining setscrews and an automatic top tang safety.

The stock is nicely figured walnut with a 3-piece Deeley-release field forend and a horn-capped pistol grip. Both barrel sets have the two-piece upper forend wood.  The stock features a cheekpiece with shadowline (disclosing its Austrian heritage), classic point-pattern checkering executed masterfully, a rear sling swivel eye, and a leather-covered butt pad. The gun says “high-quality” from end to end; it is a “best” gun!

Condition: Action is tight, barrels and trigger guard retain 99% blue, receiver finish 100%, wood finish 99%, checkering 98%, with excellent bores, in leather case with maker’s label.

About the Gunmaker:  Franz Sodia, Ferlach Austria, was founded in 1871 by Anton Sodia and has continued as a family-run business since, changing the company name when Anton’s son, Franz, took over after the father’s death in 1935.   In 1961 (one year after this shotgun was made), the gunmaker moved from Ferlach to Salzburg Austria.  In 1981, the company celebrated its 110-year anniversary with the participation of renowned personalities and dignitaries from business and politics.  In August 1981, the Austrian Minister of Commerce personally awarded the National Award to Franz Sodia that allows their company to use the Austrian Coat of Arms in the course of trade, recognizing their products as being produced with national best-quality craftsmanship.  This would be likened to getting the Royal Warrant in the UK. The grandson of Franz Sodia continues the tradition of producing exclusive best grade hunting arms. The Model 660E is no longer made, but the MSR for their current high grade (the Model 557) is $37,500 and the wait is one year for a bespoke order.
