Description:
Lefever Arms Co. H Grade 12 Gauge Side by Side
STRAIGHT GRIP, 32” FLUID STEEL, EXTRA ENGRAVING

General Specs: Lefever, Year 1913, 12 Gauge, 7lbs 11oz, SxS
Serial Number: 66993

Most who pursue American side x sides know that Lefever Arms Co. of Syracuse, N.Y. produced elegant shotguns.  The first of the prominent American double manufacturers to close its doors (1914), Lefever produced relatively few, in the range of 60.000 guns compared to Parkers ¼ million or L.C. Smith’s near ½ million.  Mr. Elliot’s book “Uncle Dan Lefever—Master Gunmaker” notes only about 9500 H Grade 12ga. guns, most with twist steel barrels.,  Finding one with most desirable 32” fluid steel barrels is not  common.  Most of the Lefever guns you find, especially the lower grade guns, are well worn and beat up.  This fine Lefever, sn66993 made in 1913, is an exceptional gun in several ways.  Special barrels already noted, this gun has more engraving than usual.  Most guns shipped with no engraving, some with a burst of scroll in the middle of the sideplate, and this one is different than all I have seen in that it has a good amount of scroll at each end of the lock plate as well as the burst of scroll in the center.  Nice touch for an H Grade!  Also, the gun retains a lot of factory original condition with 60% case color, 93% blue, double ivory beads, and very tight action.  Until 1913 the H Grade only came with a pistol grip stock.  The 1913 catalog was the first year to offer a choice of prince of wales, capped pistol grip, or straight grip.  There is something I love about long barrels and English grips…just makes it a fast handling, racy looking gun.  Weighing 7lbs. 11oz. and balanced nicely just ahead of the hinge pin, this gun would do equally well at sporting clays as it would shooting ducks over decoys with its Improved cylinder chokes.  With modern bismuth waterfowl loads and their heavy plastic wads, these old guns  shoot much tighter patterns than the choke constrictions indicate.  I can never hunt ducks with my tight choked guns as I hunt over decoys and don’t shoot the passers, only the ones that commit to the spread, with shots too close for Full choke.  All and all this is a special Lefever, with attractive engraving and condition and features not often seen.  A good but modest investment in a piece of American history that is still a fine, functional shotgun, far better than new guns for twice the cost.  Thanks for looking!
