Description:
Pre-WWI original Oberndorf Mauser Model S98 sporter (S/N 79160). 20 inch barrel with full length, dual schnabel stock. The rifle is chambered for 8mm J bore (.318) and comes with 4 20-round boxes of 170 gr soft point ammunition from Old Western Scrounger. Crown U and crown B proof and inspection marks are present and crisp. The rifle is all original and mechanically perfect. Bore is excellent with no pitting. Action and barrel are rust-free with a nice, even, dark gray patina. Adjustable double (set) triggers. Quick release floor plate. Stock is in good shape for a century-old rifle with a few dents and dings from hunting but no cracks. It has a smooth, semi-gloss finish and may have been re-varnished at some point. "Germany" is stamped in the buttstock suggesting that it may have been intended for export. Original horn butt plate with the Mauser Werke monogram. The butt plate has a few small chips. Three leaf standing rear sight and ivory bead front sight (missing hood). The rifle works beautifully and is very handy to carry. It's a great woods rifle. I've used it to take several deer and wild pigs. The 170 gr soft points are very effective out to 100 yards and possibly a little beyond if your eyes are better than mine.
