Description:
#2167 Boot Pistol, Belgian manufacture percussion action with 3” octagon barrel of approx 36-caliber. It does appear to have been sleeved with lead to reduce the bore from about a 45-caliber (which most of these little boot guns were at that time) but this could be easily removed by simply heating the barrel and melting out the lead. These were very popular personal handguns between 1835 and 1860 both in Europe and in America. In most cases, they were VERY inexpensive weapons used as a “last ditch” defense. Many were stuffed into the high-top boots of gold seekers during the California Gold Rush and if accosted while crouching down to pan a river, this was easily pulled from the boot top. This gun is a step up in quality and has engraving and a better overall appearance than most, so it was more the type used in the Chinatown opium dens and in the Barbary Coast gambling halls of San Francisco, or perhaps by the gamblers and card-sharks on the Mississippi River stern-wheeler steamboats. It is fully functional and in VG/VG+ condition. $165
