Description:
Christian Sharps, a Connecticut Yankee, began manufacturing arms in the early 1850s. By 1853 he had severed his connections with the firm that bore his name and moved to Philadelphia, where he manufactured pistols and single-shot rifles, first under his own name, and later in partnership with William Hankins.  Over 6,000 Sharps & Hankins carbines, with 24-inch barrel, were manufactured with a protective leather barrel cover for Navy usage.  A few hundred more without this cover were purchased by the U.S. Army.  This example is a leather covered Naval model chambered in .52 caliber, which fired the .56-52 Spencer rimfire cartridge. Special cartridges were also made specifically for this Model 1862 that did not bear the Spencer name. It measures 38 5/8 inches overall and has a 23 5/8-inch barrel. Pressing a release behind the trigger and pulling the trigger guard lever downward slides the barrel along the forward extension of the frame allowing access for loading and ejecting spent cartridges. The Model 1862's built for U.S. Naval use like this one have leather covers on their barrels for protection against sea-spray and salt air.  This is a nice example of it's type, retaining most all of its leather cover, the receiver retaining 60% of its original Nickel finish, and the stock retains its original cartouches which are still mostly legible and deep.  The stock appears to have been refinished a long time ago, probably at the same time when the sling swivel was removed and a wooden plug was fit in it's place.  The protective leather barrel cover is in excellent shape for it's age.  Most examples of the Naval Model 1862 no longer have any leather on them at all, much less pliable and soft original leather like this one.  The bore is shootable with sharp, distinct rifling and minor pitting scattered from the throat to the muzzle.  The action functions 100% like the day it left the Sharps & Hankins Factory, and it locks up tight with no slop.  This would be a great addition to any American Civil War collection as a scarce and desireable Union Navy shoulder arm that likely saw some naval combat.       PRICE:  $1,525       We are Antique & Modern Firearms in Lexington, KY, dealer of fine firearms since 1974.   PH. 859-276-1419         We Buy, Sell and Trade Firearms & Knives.    Have a Individual Firearm Firearms Collection, or Firearms Estate to sell, let us know, we can buy or consignment sell it for you.       (sales at am-firearms)
