Description:
#4799 Model 1860 Savage Arms Navy Revolver, 7-1/8”x36-caliber percussion. Manufactured throughout the American Civil War, the majority of these Savage revolvers were sold to various War outfitters and military facilities, this particular one has a cartouche partially visable on one grip, so most likely it did go to a Union Battalian somewhere and saw action. Quite clumsy looking to the point of butt-ugly, and yet surprisingly easy to hold and point, the Savage also had a unique design where the cylinder retracted when rotating and then went forward and the cylinder front cone sealed into the throat of the barrel, thus preventing any side blast and loss of pressure. This revolver operates correctly, and has a typically uncleaned dark black-powder bore, but looks like it should easily clean to “Good” and perhaps Very Good with just a bit more work. The exterior is basically a smooth overall light to moderate brown patina, VG left grip with a dim cartouche but does have a nasty chipped right grip at the upper front corner (see photos). Very good markings. The Savage Navy is always a good conversation piece because of the very unusual appearance, and they are true Civil War veterans. About VG $1595
