Description:
Colt 1851 Navy revolver, 3rd Variation, 80382 (1857), U.S. marked and issued to arm the Northern Armys during the Civil War years; action function is good, and indexing works . Cylinder does have slight play, but alignment is good and that isn’t unusual for the age of this revolver. The Wedge is numbered 8906. The bore shows a bit more rifling than one would expect for this age; It does have distinct rifling and mainly just moderate pitting in the grooves. The exterior is a relatively smooth even grey-brown patina. Little remains of the cylinder scene, having only about 10-15%, with the serial number still prominent. The cylinder does have spots of shallow dents (likely from its use as a tool to repair fence nails). The grips are about “VG” with a small depression on the right grip and the inspectors cartouche ”MM” visible on the left grip . Records check of the inspector of this piece was M. Moulton; Armory Sub-Inspector of Savage and Colt Model 1851 .36 caliber revolvers. Inspector marks consisting of “M”, “C”, “H”,”N”, “Y”, & “R” can be found on various parts Along with the “U.S.” stamping. Overall, this is a slightly better-than-average ’51-Navy and very desirable in being martially, marked! (There is indication that the serial number of this revolver was in the range of numbers issued to Co. E, 1st Calif. Vol. Cav). VG
