Description:

This single-action Remington is a six-shot, percussion revolver produced by E. Remington & Sons, Ilion, N.Y., based on the Beals patent of September 14, 1858.  It is a large-frame .44 caliber percussion 6-shot revolver fitted with an 8 inch barrel.  The Remington revolver owes its durability to a “top strap”, solid-frame design. The design is stronger and less prone to frame stretching than the Colt revolvers of the same era.    An innovative feature of this Remington was "safety slots" milled between chambers on the cylinder. The milled slot positively secured the hammer between chambers for safe carry by preventing accidental cylinder rotation.   The Remington revolver permitted easy cylinder removal, allowing a quick reload with a spare pre-loaded cylinder (an advantage over other revolver designs of the time.)  This Civil War vintage U.S military Remington retains about 70-80% of its original blue finish, with much “mirror blue” finish on the barrel, and a bright shiny bore, sharp rifling, and a perfectly functioning action. The action lock-up is tighter than a lot of new revolvers.  The grips are in good condition, not having any cracks.  The gun is all numbers matching and it retains all of its military stamps and inspectors cartouche on the left grip. Sub-inspector marks on various parts consist of “F”, “J”, “W”, & “7”  A very fine example of its type.  An interesting note observed when checking the gun’s serial number, was the discovery of a former owner’s name carefully carved into the inside of each grip
Apparently in 1909.
There is a notation with this revolver that its serial number is within the range
Of numbers  issued to Company A, of the 13th Missouri  Voluntary Cavalry, January of 1865. Excellent Antique Condition.
