Description:
Offered for your consideration is this vintage Winchester 1873 saddle ring carbine made in 1886. It's in the sought after 44-40 caliber and has the standard 20 inch carbine barrel. The bore is exceptionally good for a 131 year old carbine, I'd rate the bore a solid 8 to 8.5 on a 10 scale. The rifling is still nice and sharp, there is very, very light scattered pin point pitting in the grooves but overall a great shootable bore! The front sight is the standard post style, the rear sight is the Winchester #44A "ladder style" flip up. The sight is intact and fully functional, the elevation slide holds position as it should from top to bottom adjustment. The finish on the barrel, magazine tube and receiver is a fairly even dark plum blue. The rear barrel band shows up bright in the photos, must be the lighting reflection because it's nearly as dark as the barrel. I don't see any pitting worth noting, a little on the forward receiver ring areas, probably from carry use long ago. The receiver is in very good mechanical condition, feeds, chambers and ejects smoothly with solid lockup, no lever droop. The dust cover works as it should, slides open smoothly when the bolt is cycled and holds position, no excessive side play or jambing. The stock and forearm are tight and solid and exhibit use wear typically seen on the old West saddle guns. The wood is flush around the tangs except for a piece missing on the right side at the receiver as you can see in the photos. It does not compromise the integrity of the stock. The buttplate has the trapdoor and cleaning rod compartment. No cleaning rod though. These were the working guns of the early cowboys and settlers and got used a lot! This one has not been abused and gives evidence of being well cared for by it's owners over the years. It has many years of good shooting left and with the nice bore I expect it will be a great, accurate shooter. I'll try to get it test fired in the next few days and will post results. I'll be glad to take any additional photos you want to see, just advise the specific views you want.

**Test fired 2/19: Target photo added. Headspace is fine. 1 3/4" group at 40 yards using 200 grain cast bullet Cowboy Action loads by Arrdvark Labs. Fired cases ejected fine, this carbine will shoot better than my eyesight permits!
