Payment Types Accepted: checks, cashiers/bank check, money order Description: ONE OF THE MOST HISTORIC RIFLES OF THE POST-CIVIL WAR WESTERN INDIAN WARS, U.S. SPRINGFIELD 1866 .50-70 TRAPDOOR RIFLE, This model is known as the 2nd. Allen Conversion of the .58 caliber Civil War Springfield rifle/musket (the 1st model was in .58 cal. Rim Fire) and was the first Trapdoor to be in .50-70 Center Fire caliber, most of these were immediately shipped west for the Indian Wars and saw hard service, only 25,000 of these were made in 1866 and then the improved model 1868 .50-70 was made, easily identified by the "1866" breech block marking, Civil War lock plate (this one dated 1862) and 40" Civil War lined barrel (36 5/8" to breech block), this is a fine example with uncleaned gray/brown patina barrel (NOTE: these were never blued, simply left in "the white" by Springfield), tight action, exc. markings on the lock plate, exc. deep reddish/brown attractive walnut stock has not been sanded, has one rack number in the side of the stock, exc. bright bore, cleaning rod intact, possibly a very faint cartouche in the stock, but hard to tell as this is a dense piece of walnut that wouldn't take a cartouche well- so I'd have to say it isn't easily visible if at all, correct sights, this is a nice unmessed with example.
