Description:
For sale, a very unique sporter built from a National Arms & Ammunition Company Mauser Model IG 1871.  National Arms & Ammunition Co. was an English company in Birmingham, England that received a small contract to build Mauser M71's for the Prussian Government.  They were contracted to build a total of 75,000 rifles in the initial phase of 71 production.  This particular rifle started life in 1875 as an Infanterie-Gewehr 71 single shot military rifle chambered for the 11mm cartridge made for the Prussian military.  The date of manufacture, 1875, is stamped on the right rear of the receiver.  The left rear of the receiver is stamped "I.G. Mod.71".  The NA&A Co. Ld logo which are those letters inside of a triangle, is stamped on the top flat of the rear octagon section of the barrel  There are other military proof and acceptance stamps stamped on various parts all over the rifle.  At some point in it's life it was removed from military service either officially or unofficially, and converted by a skilled gunsmith into a sporting rifle for hunting game.  It's current configuration scarcely resembles what it looked like from the factory.  The original military style stock was shortened, sanded/shaped, and checkered at the wrist.  A Model 71 bolt was used with the knob flattened, checkered on one side, and turned down 90 degrees.  The original sights were scrapped completely, with a new ramp-style front sight expertly attached to the barrel and a two leaf express style rear sight installed in the same way.  Typical european style sling swivels were added to the rifle, with one installed in the stock and the other soldered to the underside of the barrel.  The original trigger guard was reused but was first flipped around opposite the original orientation, reshaped, and the swivel removed.  Finally, the barrel which was originally browned and the receiver which was originally left in the white were blued.  The end result of these changes was a very handsome hunting rifle that is unique, but has quite a few features found on commercially made European sporting rifles of that era.  This is the first sporter we have ever had of this quality derived from the 1871 Mauser.  An example of this rifle in it's all-matching original configuration from this rare maker is a very valuable collectors piece with recent s bringing over $4000 on up.  While this rifle is a long way from it's original configuration and the parts are not all matching numbered, it is a classy, well made sporter by a skilled european gunsmith and quite likely one of a kind.  Price Reduced!
