FINE Civil War Antique Manhattan NAVY Revolver

SCARCE & Fine with Clear Cylinder Scenes!

Here we present an antique Manhattan Navy Series III Revolver, made circa 1862 during the American Civil War, in Newark, New Jersey. Manhattan Fire Arms Co. was founded in 1856 specifically to capitalize on the soon to be expiring Colt patents in 1857. This strategy worked very well for the company and they began by making high quality and very close copies of both Colts and other popular pistols with expired patents. In fact, Manhattan’s copies of Colts were so close that Colt tried to kill their production with a lawsuit, even though their patent had expired. Quite obviously, this pistol is a direct and quality copy of the Colt 1851 Navy.

Manhattan’s revolvers were very well received by the public. The company never received U.S. military contracts, except for a small delivery, most likely on the regimental level. Nevertheless, many Manhattan revolvers found themselves on smoky Civil War battlefields, purchased privately by officers and soldiers, and they were certainly in use at home. The war created a vast and unquenchable market for firearms of all types.

The overall condition is fine. Substantial original blue remains underneath the barrel, protected by the loading lever, as well as around the barrel lug and wedge. Small amounts of silver plate remain on the brass grip frame. The balance has a gorgeous plum colored patina. The cylinder scene features 5 distinct panels, all of which are clear and visible, which is highly unusual for these revolvers. Almost always the roll engraved circular “framing” of the scene remains with no visible scene. All serial numbers match. All markings are clear and legible. The walnut grips are nearly perfect, with nearly 100% of the original varnish. The action is excellent and the bore is in good condition.

Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.

Barrel is 6-1/2 inches in length.

Caliber: .36 percussion

The bore is in good condition and the action is excellent.

Overall condition as seen in photos.
