Description:
For sale, a beautifully made English double barrel percussion 12 gauge shotgun by Hollis & Sheath with "London Fine Twist" Damascus barrels.  This circa 1840's English double was quite the piece of work in its day, and the fine craftsmanship and attention to detail is evident upon inspection.  The 31 & 1/4 inch Damascus barrels are engraved with "London Fine Twist" in a scroll and floral design; and there is both a waterfowl hunting scene near the locks and a stylish arrow design at the muzzle inlaid in silver on the top of the barrels.  At the base of the barrels both ahead and behind the nipples there are silver bands inlaid as well.  The 12 gauge bores are excellent, and show no deep pitting or bulges.  Both locks are nicely engraved with "Hollis & Sheath" and game and scroll designs. Both locks are functional and mechanically sound, however the left hammer is loose because the key on which the hammer is supposed to tighten down on has broken or rounded off.  So as a consequence the hammer is loose and falls back and forth.  I took close pictures of this so you can see what would need to be done in order to fix it.  A skilled welder could build this key back up, and drill and tap it and this shotgun would be ready to fire.  The original stock is in average shape.  The original checkering has been rounded off around the pistol grip and there is a crack running from side to side on the forearm that has been glued.  The beautifully inlaid and engraved trigger guard is nice and tight, as is the metal buttplate.  The keel of the buttstock has both a nameplate and a cap box.  The nameplate has never been engraved, and the cap box has a spring tensioned lid that is just slightly loose.  The original ramrod is still with this shotgun and it appears to be solid with no cracks or damage.  This shotgun would be a great decorator or mantle decoration; OR, it could be restored to it's former glory and actually fired.  It is a nice enough piece to warrant the small cost and time involved, and the barrels are in such good shape nothing would need to be done to them.  A true gentleman's shotgun with class and character.
