My 1863 Type I  Springfield Rifled Musket, manufactured and dated in the first half of 1864.  It comes with the Ridaboch & Co. sling it had on it when I bought it in 1960 for use in the Centennial reenactments then being planned.  That company was established on Manhattan in 1847,  and provided military goods of all sorts throughout the Civil War.

The rifle is not mint, but in good shape with relatively little pitting near powder areas and a pleasing smooth and usually bright patina elsewhere; see the photographs for details.  The lock plate gives the Eagle and 1864, the butt plate "US," the rounded Type I barrel bands "U," the VP and eagle's head stamp on the barrel is there, but the V obscured.  No cartouches visible.  All screws and mechanics are as bought, and appear to be original.  The mechanism is fine and tight.  The wood stock is strong, and generally good, except for a series of shallow dings on the reverse side of the stock approaching the butt plate, shown in the photographs.   Bore is strongly rifled but not perfect enough for exacting target shooting.   When I took it to the range competitively (not my specialty), the early shots were fairly accurate, later shots less so.

It's interesting that this Springfield is personalized in three ways.  The initials "R.A." are carved into the sling, and there are two coins set in the stock.  One is a "Hard Times Token," reading "Millions for Defense, Not One Cent For Tribute" which dates back to c1837, and another is an 1864 US 2 Cent Piece.

This is an excellent piece for reenactment, a pleasing piece for display and conversation, and good fun for plinking in the woods.  It's been a good friend for 57 years.

Buyer pays $35 toward postage to the lower 48, and I will pay any excess.
