Description:
For sale, a beautiful cased set of American made dueling/target pistols by the famous Anschutz family.  This set of circa 1850's dueling pistols are .36 caliber and were made by E. Anschutz in Philadelphia, Pa.  They showcase the very fine craftsmanship that was expected from this prestigious gun maker.  Both of the 8.5 inch rifled blued steel barrels show 90% of the original finish with a light patina and some handling marks.  The locks, hammers, trigger guards, and tangs are spectacular on these pistols.  They have very nicely done deep scroll engraving with sharp edges and very fine detail work.  One hammer has been expertly repaired as you can see in the pictures, and both hammers lock positively in both the half and full-cock positions.  The triggers are adjustable single-set type triggers.  The rear sights are adjustable for elevation, and the front sights are dovetailed in and drift adjustable.  Both wooden stocks are in excellent shape.  They are free from cracks or repairs, and the checkering is still crisp with some minor handling marks.  Everything is nice and tight on this set, and everything works like it was intended to. The set is complete with period accouterments including a powder flask, wooden cap container, bullet mold, screwdriver, snuff spoon/powder measure, and ramrod.  Also included are a contemporary brass capper and oil bottle in the Walnut case with brass hardware.  The well-made contemporary case is lined with green felt and fitted nicely to the pistols, with 2 enclosed corner compartments for bullets, etc.  The lid on the case has a decorative brass shield inlaid in the center suitable for an engraved monogram, initials, or a dedication.  This is a set of American made dueling/target pistols worthy of being the centerpiece of an antique arms collection.  The high degree of condition and attention to detail in their construction is both beautiful and fascinating.  One can only wonder who owned them and if they were ever used to solve a grievance!
