Description:
This is a very nice example of a U.S. made .36 caliber Navy which was probably sold in London. It carries the "NEW YORK" address on the barrel and is completely British proofed. The serial number 168083 indicates manufacture in 1863. It is cased in a typical English oak box with all the proper accessories. The gun, the box and the tools are in excellent original condition. The barrel retains approximately 95% original bright blue, the cylinder just slightly less. The naval battle scene is vivid and sharp. All serial numbers are matching, including the wedge and the arbor. The front of the cylinder and the chambers show little if any sign of being shot. The color case-hardening on the frame, hammer and rammer is slightly muted but very even and attractive. The varnished walnut grips are near perfect and the grip straps retain about 50% of the original silver wash. The bore is bright and sharp with only a small spot of corrosion. All in all, this is a very nice example of a Civil War period Colt Navy, that may well have been returned to the states as many were, to meet the war time demand. If so, is saw very little use.
