Description:
This is an E. (Ely) Whitney 2nd Model 36 Cal percussion revolver.  This gun serial number 9559 is one of aprox.1200 type Two Whitney revolvers made from 1850 to 1860.  Many of these saw action in the Civil War.  The gun has a brass trigger guard and a 7 1/2" octagon barrel.  The bore of the barrel is fair with some pitting. The original walnut grips have some wear at the bottom, but no splits or cracks.
The gun seems to have retained a siginicant amount of the original finish (the  color is even and consistant but dull).  The case colored loading lever is a fairly consistant dark gray patina. The gun functions and retains all original parts other than the front sight which seems to have beem filed down.
A nice hard to find item for any Civil War collection.
