Description:
This special order, deluxe double rifle was completed in 1926 as a 350 #2 double rifle for a client in Western Africa, now Nigeria. It features best quality 26" chopper lump barrels with perfect bores, plus a host of special order features, all documented in the Rigby record books, a copy of which will accompany the rifle. Just some of these special features include a flip-over front sight protector, a perfectly executed double border cheek piece (few Rigby rifles were built with cheek pieces) on a special order fancy grade of fancy French walnut. It also has, and probably was fitted from new, with a reinforcing bolt through the action head. This looks completely period to the rifle, as there is no indication of any splitting in the head of the stock. The rifle was engraved by Harry Kell himself in the typical Rigby style of the period, with a few extra flourishes, such as the scroll on the rib around the special order front sight and modest coverage elsewhere. Length of pull is 14 3/4" to a new Silvers pad fitted in the 80's.
The rifle weighs 9 lbs, 9 oz, exactly as recorded in the Rigby books, and is cased in its original leather case with a correct 43 Sackville St label; all in decent condition - solid in every way but externally showing the effects of almost 100 years of use and travel. The case includes a complete mix of some original and some Rigby reproduction cleaning and other accessories, including a correct cleaning rod not shown in the photographs. The rifle itself has considerable original case colors and blue. The stock was almost surely re-oiled at the time of caliber conversion and the barrels were re-blacked at that time, but overall this rifle would qualify as mostly original condition. When the rifle was returned to Rigby in the early 80's it was rebored by them to 9.3 by 74R caliber, thus the bore is new. More importantly, the work and the re-regulation were all conducted by David Perkins, one of Rigby's (and England's) best true gunsmiths. I have personally shot it and know it is a tack driver. It shoots 1" groups at 50 mts. with open sights and Norma 285 grain bullets. Of course the rifle is tight, on the face and works perfectly.
This special order Rigby was clearly ordered by someone who knew exactly what he wanted: it would have been perfect for hunting Lord Derby Eland or Forest Buffalo and, hopefully it will go to a new home where it will be put to a similar use again today.
It is priced at a very reasonable $19,500.
