RARE ANTIQUE Portuguese STEYR M1886 Carbine
1 of 4000 Made, Used Against Von Vorbeck in Africa
Here we present an antique Steyr Model 1886 Carbine, made circa 1886 on contract for the Portuguese military. This is one of only 4,000 carbines produced of this model, making it quite rare for military collectors. It was one of the earliest bolt action rifles, heavily based on the German Mauser Model 1871/84 that preceded it. Its main feature was its magazine tube, developed by Alfred von Kropatschek. According to some sources, the Portuguese M1886 saw most action in their colonies, especially during World War I against Paul von Lettow-Vorbeck’s meager forces (3,000 Germans and 11,000 colonial African soldiers) as they successfully held off combined British, Belgian and Portuguese forces numbering over 300,000 in Angola and Mozambique.
This specimen is in good overall condition. The steel features a dark patina. The markings on the metal are clear and legible. The stock shows signs of heavy use. Two circle cartouches are visible on either side of the butt stock. The bore is fine and shiny. The action is excellent.
