Description:

10th CAVALRY MARKED Antique SHARPS .50-70 Carbine

WESTERN FRONTIER Cart.Conv. from CIVIL WAR Carbine

Here we present an antique Sharps New Model Conversion Cavalry Carbine, made circa 1863. This saddle ring carbine began life as a percussion gun destined for the smoky battlefields of the American Civil War. Afterwards in 1867 the US. Government converted from percussion to a cartridge fired gun, and sent it off to the Western Frontier for the rest of its service life.

This carbine is marked “CO.10.CAV” in block letters on the butt near the plate on the left side. The 10th Cavalry was one of the original six “colored” regiments in the U.S. Army. They were authorized by an act of Congress on July 28, 1866 and formed at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas on September 21, 1866. They were primarily engaged on the Western Frontier against the Cheyenne, Kiowa, Comanche and Apache Native Americans. They became known as “Buffalo Soldiers” by the Native Americans.

It features a clear cartouche from its initial military inspection going into the Civil War: “JT” for John Taylor. Its bore was relined at the time of conversion, so that the bore measures .50 and it has 3 groove rifling. The metal parts have a very coherent, dark brown patina. The walnut stock is in good condition with a stable split running along the left side of the wrist. It is clear that this Sharps Carbine saw much use, but was kept it good functional condition in its day. The bore and the action are both in very good condition.

Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.

Barrel is round and 22 inches in length.

Caliber: .50-70 GOVT

Bore is in very good condition and the firing mechanism is fine.

Overall condition as seen in photos.

Here is a fantastic, truly historic Sharps that saw the United States at Civil War, was converted, and then saw continued use on the American Frontier in the hands of the 10th Cavalry—the first of the African American regiments in the regular U.S. Army.
