Description:
NSN, .38 caliber, 5" octagon barrel with a very good bore that has mild freckling within the grooves along its length. This percussion revolver, manufactured by A. Sommerville & Co. uses Joseph Bentley's patented action and has an overall plum-brown patina with scattered small areas of surface freckling throughout, and silvering along the edges. The left side of the barrel is faintly stamped underneath the loading lever “H.E. DIMICK & CO. ST. LOUIS MO" in handstamped letters, and small impact marks on the left flat. Horace E. Dimick & Co. were a St. Louis military goods dealer that operated before, during, and after the Civil War. The gun is British proofed with the British maker's mark on the oval escutcheon at the butt of the checkered walnut grips, which are in very good shape with some light flattening of the points as well as minor handling marks on either side. The mechanism is tight and fully functional, and this is a very good example of an early Webley open-top revolver. {Ref: “Webley Revolvers" by Bruce & Reinhart; 1988} Antique
