Description:
NSN, .58 Caliber, 40” barrel with a good plus bore that has darker freckling within the grooves. This musket has an 1863 dated lock with 1864 dated barrel tang, and has an overall dark brown patina with moderate-heavy freckling throughout, as well as some light pitting at the breech and nipple bolster. The pitting continues on the lock, which has a matching brown patina, and fairly crisp original markings as well. The walnut stock is in good condition, and has been sanded with a military oil finish added over light handling marks and surface blemishes. There is a chip at the forend cap, and cracks and small chip at the lock screw heads. An incorrect iron ramrod is present, as is a period , non-issue, brown bridle leather sling which has heavy crackling and flaking along the edges, but is still supple and intact. The mechanism is tight and fully functional, and a US Model 1855 socket bayonet is also included, which has less pitting than the musket, and a mellow, mottled gray patina. This is a fair plus example of a Model 1863, Massachusetts-made musket, and would make a nice representative example for a collector. Antique
