#37008. A. Forgeron 12 Ga sidelock Live pigeon.
Proofed in 1930, made by Alphonse Forgeron , 4 rue A. Borgnet Liege . Registered with the Liege proof house from 1880 to 1932.
A name synonym with high quality firearms, enough for the succeeding makers, Boulanger(1933 to 1962) and then J. Pirotte to use the mark “Le Forgeron”.
The gun weight is 7 pounds 7 Oz, with 30” barrels . Like new 2 ¾” chambers with long forcing cones. Bores are shinny throughout, .724” in diameter choked .012” (SK2) and .024”(IMD) . They ring like churches bells. The rib is quite interesting ; with a slight convex profile , being raised 1/8” at mid barrel, it is also tapered from .565” at the breech to .305” at the muzzle. Large ejector bodies . Blacking is in 95% condition with a couple light scratches.
Very nice action with intricate chiseling . 100% covering of engraving in an interesting mix of roses, scrolls and art deco style. Auto safety , bushed strikers, articulated front trigger and hand detach side locks with the “ trademark” lever of Forgeron guns. Cosmetics and mechanics are in 99% condition.
I restocked the gun around 1994 with Tessier walnut ; 15 7/8” LOP over a checkered butt, 1 ½” and 2” of drop , 3/8” of cast off. It has tear drops and a gold escutcheon.
Stock and forend remain in 90% condition with some handling marks . The checkering is also in 90% condition. The balance point is right at the hinge.
Don Zutz in his authoritative book “The double shotgun” states that “ Forgeron’s guns are among the very best in the world”.
