Description:
For sale is this Holland & Holland double rifle.  It was completed by H&H on August 27, 1877 and is a magnificent collector piece. It is in almost new condition and has a very formidable provenance.  This hammer rifle has 28 inch steel barrels, stalking safties, a Jones underlever and is engraved in the traditional English scroll patern found on rifles of this period.  The bores show sharp rifling, little use and no pitting.  The rifle regulates extremely well with 6 1/2 to 7 drams of black powder and a 588 grain projectile as 2 rights and 2 lefts can easily be covered by the palm of a hand at 50 yards.  The rifle weighs 11 lbs and 8 oz and has one express sight and two flip up long range sights. About 30 years ago, I asked Ray St Ledger to re-case color the action and hardware as he is recognized as the best artisan in the business and has been used exclusively for decades by Holland & Holland, Purdey, Boss, Westley Richards, Rigby and other best makes for thier new guns. Needless to say, the job turned out spectacular and original for the rifle. Included with the rifle are 10 loaded brass cartridges and about 50 fired brass cases.

The rifle was previously owned by Charles K. Post, whose name is on the rifle's case, a US Navy officer assigned to the armored cruiser USS New York (ARC-2) that enforced the blockade of the port of Santiago de Cuba harbor in 1898 when five Spanish war ships tried to break out of the naval blockade during the Spanish American War.  During the ensuing naval battle, all Spanish ships were sunk or scuttled by the American fleet that included the New York.  The New York was launched in December of 1891 and was exceptionally fast for its day at 21 kts.  It mounted 8 inch and 12 inch guns and was credited with actions against 11 Spanish vessels.
