Description:
This appears like it would be the 1816 musket with a Maynard tape conversion. The bbl is 42" cal 69. The lock is a Remington lock dated 1857 and "US". The same date is on the bbl. US is stamped in the standard spot on the buttplate. There are a couple of cartouches and other marks which are faint and somewhat readable. In fact there are several marks all over this gun. Must be different unit numbers etc? Stamped on the bbl is "N J". Possibly for New Jersey Militia or something similar? This is pretty much your standard musket style with 4 bands with the front having 2 bands together on the forearm cap and incorporating the front sight. Cleaning rod is present. A lot of good eye appeal in this gun. Pretty much grey metal all over with the lockplate being grey/brown. Wood has a few cracks but it is all there. Great conversation piece or mantel gun.
