Description:
This antique (1890) special order deluxe 1886 Winchester is in 45-70 and has a number of unique features, all of which are documented in the Cody records. These include nickel plated bolt and lever (Winchester nitre blued or blackened the exposed surfaces on these two parts) and butt plate (not blackened), and extra length special order 28” barrel. The original caliber was 40/82 but the change to 45-70 was almost certainly done during the 1896 return to the factory listed in the letter, as it is obviously a factory barrel and its condition is completely consistent with the rest of the gun. The rifle was used but was well cared for and has survived in excellent condition. The case hardening is properly fading and the forging striations on the receiver are starting to show through as they should. The bore is excellent with sharp lands and grooves and only minor pin pricks here and there. The barrel and magazine tube have excellent rust bluing with loss only on the edges of the octagon profile, and the screws and loading gate have most of their nitre bluing and only wear on the high points..the screw slots are NOT buggered even on the buttplate, its only finish wear on high parts of the screws in the photos. Includes an ancient hang tag and Cody research info. This is about as good as it gets in an antique 1886 deluxe Winchester.
