Description:
This is a French Model 1768 Charleville Musket from the Revolutionary War.  France shipped thousands of these to the Continental Army in the American fight for freedom against the British.  Following the War, the Charleville was copied by the American Armory at Springfield which became known as the US Model 1795 Musket.  Ninety Years Later at the beginning of the Civil War, many of these old Veterans of the Rev War were converted from Flint to Percussion and put back into service by the Confederacy due to a lack of arms.  In the South, it was not uncommon for the Grandson of a Revolutionary War Veteran to serve in the Confederate Army and no doubt, some were literally armed with their Grandfathers' weapons during the early part of the war.  See Photo of Confederate armed with a Model 1777 Charleville with near identical Percussion Conversion.  This particular musket was found in South Carolina by a picker who told us he acquired it from a family.  Check out the architecture and the long fluted comb of the stock.  At 250 years old, the metal and the wood are in remarkably good shape and this may be partially due to this Confederate overhaul it likely received around the time of its 90th Birthday.  It has a simple Drum style conversion to percussion which was  likely done by a Confederate Armory or Contracted Gunsmith.  The rear portion of the original faceted flash pan is still surrounding the lower part of the drum.  Many of the parts internally have Roman numerals which are indicative of Confederate work but may also date back to the original date of manufacture at Charleville Arsenal in the 1700's.  The lock plate has a clear CHARLEVILLE in script...one of the best I've seen as most are no longer legible.  The action works well and the original sling swivels are intact. The ramrod also appears to be original to this musket.  The original stock is in good shape and the front, which were often cut down for use as shotguns, has never been modified.  There is however a crack and a large chip out of the left side of the forend just past the front band.  It is split along the left side with an going into the ramrod channel but not completely through.  I realize collectors don't like to hear about flaws but this isn't something made in 1968, but rather 1768 and it just comes with the territory.  The fact that this musket has survived this long is a true testament to the many hands of Americans who took care of it through all or parts of 4 different centuries.  A true Revolutionary War Charleville Musket that in no small way helped free America from English rule.
