Greenough in Birmingham, England, circa 1870. For centuries England has been known for its fine shotguns, especially those of certain makers known as “Best” Makers of guns. It has become a tradition. Names like Westley Richards & Co., James Purdey & Sons, as well as Manton and Egg became legendary even in their own day. They were the best of the best in style, quality and refinement, and they developed names and advertising to match. There were a host of other, lesser known makers though, who were able to compete and make quality shotguns in their own right for both the domestic market and for export. Everyone needs a shotgun, right? Some were more willing to pay the premium price tag than others. Here we have a beautiful engraved, functional and well-preserved English shotgun, made by N.C. Greenough of England. N.C. Greenough was a trade name for an English gunmaker by the name of J.P. Clabrough & Bros. out of Birmingham, England. The gun maker was founded in 1871 to supply the San Francisco, California sporting goods retailer that they had run since 1867. This is very likely one of those shotguns exported to the United States in the 1870s and sold in the San Francisco J.P. Clabrough & Bros. shop, this during a time of great opportunity for settlers of all sorts. This specimen is in fine overall condition. The frame still bears vivid case colors. The Damascus twist barrels have a deep brown patina. The markings and engraving are very clear and legible. The stock is fine with no weakness or cracks, only missing a small decorative piece at the tip of the splinter forearm. The bores are in fine condition and the barrels lock up tight against the frame. The action is excellent. Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction. Barrel is 30 inches in length. Caliber: 12 gauge Bore is in fine condition and the action is excellent. Overall condition as seen in photos. Here is a very nice British double gun with a San Francisco history that would look very nice in your collection. Very Fast. Very Safe. FREE SHIPPING WORLDWIDE.
