Description:
L.C. Smith "O" Grade 16 Gauge SxS
1899 GUN, 70% CASE COLOR, CONDITION!

General Specs: LC Smith, Year 1899, 16 Gauge, 6lbs 14oz, Side by Side
Serial Number: 60594

The L.C. Smith "O" Grade, a “pre-1913” name given to this grade by Hunter Arms prior to 1913 (too obvious?) was a step above the Field Grade that came out in 1913 from Hunter Arms in that it had a bit nicer wood and checkering, a black ebony inlay in the forend tip, and a set of nice damascus steel barrels.  This gun, sn60594 built in 1899, is in remarkable condition for its 118 years of age, with lots of case color, perfect screws, perfect wood to metal fit, nicely figured European walnut (book says English walnut, looks like French to me), factory original checkering is excellent, no cracks anywhere, full length butt stock to the factory butt plate, 30" damascus barrels that still retain 98% of their original black and white pattern, and tight as new mechanically.  With the long barrels and 1/2 round pistol grip, this is a great sporting clays or upland gun, and weighing 6lbs. 14oz. is not too heavy to carry all day.  They only made about 3100 of these guns in 16ga., likely less than 2500 or so left on the planet, so it is not a common gun, especially with this much factory condition remaining.  We had intended to restore the wood on this gun, as it has nice figure and would come alive with a fine oil finish (add $450 if you want that done to perfection within 8 weeks of purchase), but have decided to leave that choice to the next owner.  The balance of the gun is so nice that some may prefer the "as found" condition of this Elsie.  The wood is not bad, as you can see in the photos, just a nice piece of walnut to show off the gun.  These guns continue to increase in value as you enjoy their use, so it is an affordable, investment quality shotgun still up to the task of filling game bags and crushing targets.  We can alter chokes to your liking if you so choose.  Thanks for looking!
