RARE Civil War Sharps & Hankins 1862 SHORT Carbine
KNOWN Used by 11th NEW YORK Volunteer Cavalry SRC
Here we present an antique Sharps & Hankins Model 1862 Army Short Cavalry Carbine, also known as the 11th New York Volunteer Cavalry Model due to its known usage by that unit. The total number of these produced is only estimated to be 1,000. Made from 1862-65, the bulk of production including the more numerous Navy Carbine was still only 8,000. These are seldom encountered Civil War carbines.
The shape of the carbine is distinctly Sharps, and operates a bit differently than other carbines of the era. The trigger guard doubles as a lever, which is opened by pressing a small tab inside the smaller loop of the lever. Opening the lever slides the barrel away from the recoil shield for loading and unloading.
The steel bears a deep brown patina. The patent markings are a bit faded, but the serial numbering is clear and legible. Front sight is absent. Rear sight is a brazed leaf style replacement. The walnut stock shows handling and much use. Replacement screw at the rear of the top tang. Bore is in good condition and the action is fine.
